What Roo Code is
Roo Code is a free, open-source AI agent that runs as an extension inside VS Code, the popular code editor. It can read your project, write and edit files, run commands in the terminal, and work through multi-step tasks — the same building blocks behind a landing page, an email sequence, or a full funnel. It is model-agnostic and BYOK ("bring your own key"), so you connect an account from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, or even a local model, and Roo Code orchestrates the work while you pay the model provider directly.
How it works: modes
Instead of one do-everything assistant, Roo Code splits work into modes. Code mode handles day-to-day building. Architect mode plans a change before touching files. Ask mode answers questions mid-flow. Debug mode chases down why something broke. And Custom Modes let you invent your own — a "Copywriter" that only writes in your voice, or a "Launch" mode locked to specific files and models. Each mode can be told which model to use and which files it is allowed to touch.
Rules that shape every task
Roo Code reads plain-markdown rules files from a .roo folder in your project. Anything you write there — your offer, your audience, your tone, your do's and don'ts — becomes standing instructions the agent follows on every task. This is the difference between an agent that guesses and one that already knows your business.
